Banksmeadow Waste Transfer Centre

On 3 March 2014, a State Significant Development Application was made to NSW Planning & Environment for the construction and operation of a waste transfer terminal and associated rail infrastructure at 14 Beauchamp Road and 34-35 McPherson Street, Banksmeadow.

The proposed development of the Banksmeadow Waste Transfer Terminal, includes:

  • demolition of existing buildings
  • construction and operation of a waste transfer terminal and associated rail infrastructure to receive and process up to 400,000 tonnes per annum of putrescible waste and up to 100,000 tonnes per annum of non-putrescible waste
  • transfer of putrescible waste by rail to Woodlawn for treatment, recycling and energy recovery
  • transfer of non-putrescible waste by semi-trailer to resource recovery facilities, such as the Camellia Recycling Centre for recovery of recyclables prior to re-processing

The development is a State Significant Development (SSD) application under Part 4, Division 4.1 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The Minister for Planning and Environment is the consent authority for the proposed development.

Timeline

  • 29 April 2014: The project was approved for exhibition by the Director General, under section 78 A (8A) of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
  • 17 April 2014 – 28 May 2014: The Development Application was publicly exhibited. Submissions made to NSW Planning & Environment are currently being reviewed by NSW Planning & Environment at this time.
