All local businesses that serve food to the public are regulated by the Botany Bay City Council and the NSW Food Authority.
We provide advice and approve new businesses, monitor food hygiene practices, do checks for contamination, follow up on complaints, and make sure business owners and their staff comply with laws and standards.
Food Safety Inspections
The Council’s Environmental Health Officers regularly inspect and advise food premises about hygiene practices. Contact our staff to:
- Get advice on food hygiene
- Make a complaint about food quality, contaminated food or unclean premises
Scores on Doors
This is a voluntary program that recognises and celebrates food businesses that have demonstrated a good to excellent standard of food safety.
When a business achieves good to excellent standards, at an unannounced inspection, they are awarded a star rating by a Council Environmental Health Officer. A certificate is then issued by the Council and positioned in a highly visible place for customers.
All restaurants, cafes, takeaways and bakeries in the City’s local area are eligible to participate provided they meet the required food safety standard. To find out more you can contact Council’s Environmental Health Unit on 02 9366 3537.
