National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Information Session

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be rolled out in the City of Botany Bay in July 2017. To help better understand what this means for you and your family, the City of Botany Bay is hosting an NDIS Information Session. The session will include what is the NDIS and who is eligible; how current funding and services may transition to the new NDIS scheme; planning for NDIS; and other topics. This information session is free to people with disability, their family and carers. It is being held this Thursday 28 July from 5;30pm – 7:30pm at the George Hanna Memorial Museum and Mascot Library. Please call 9669 4640 to rsvp and for further information.

Australian Census – 9 August 2016

The Australian Census is our country’s largest collection of statistics undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). For over 100 years, the Census has provided a snapshot of Australia. It shows how our nation has changed over time and provides information to properly plan for the future.

The next Census is on 9 August and will be Australia’s first predominantly digital Census. From 1 August all homes will receive a letter with a unique Census Login. Every household must use it to complete the Census online. If you would prefer a paper form, there will be directions on how to order a paper form.

The information you provide in the Census helps estimate Australia’s population, which is used to distribute government funds and plan services for your community – housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals and the environment. So take the time to answer the questions. Not only will it help our future but you are required by law to complete the Census.

Keen on history?

Our City has a strong community of people interested in our history. We have a hard working Botany Historical Trust, dedicated Council staff, an interesting blogspot and our own museum, the George Hanna Memorial Museum in Mascot. Together these factors keep our history alive. Have a look at the blog spot to find out some interesting facts about our history. Visit If you are interested in becoming a member of the Botany Historical Trust call 9366 3888.

Show us your memories

Council’s museum is looking for volunteers to be photographed holding a photograph or object that is important to them. It can be anything; the only requirement is that the photograph or object must be directly connected to the City of Botany Bay.

It could be a family portrait taken outside your home, or a pair of shoes that was made locally. Participants will also be interviewed about their selection. The best portraits and stories will become an exhibition to be held later in the year. For more information contact 9366 3802 or email

Need help with your tax?

It’s that time of year! July is once again upon us and we need to start working on our tax returns. Council acknowledges that this can be difficult for some members of our community. That is why in partnership with the Australian Taxation Office, the City of Botany Bay runs a Tax Help Program to provide assistance to people who earn less than $50,000 a year. The service is run out of both Eastgardens and Mascot Libraries on select days from 3 August through to 31 October. Bookings are essential so please call 9366 3888 for more information or to book a session.
