Honouring a former Mayor

Last Friday I had the pleasure of joining members of the L’Estrange family to pay tribute to Michael L’Estrange with a plaque dedicated in his honour. Many within our City would know of L’Estrange Park but not the man it was named after.

Michael L’Estrange was an Alderman (Councillor) of our City from 1914-30 and Mayor from 1926-29. Mr L’Estrange made an important and enduring contribution to this area’s development by his leadership in administration, enthusiastic support of the development of new park areas, the development of civic facilities, support for educational and charitable activities, and the facilitation of local connections with the growth of aviation facilities.

Botany Council welcomes ORICA’s HCB waste export application

Council can confirm that ORICA has lodged a HCB waste export application with the Federal Government to export an initial shipment of 135 tonnes of Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) waste currently stockpiled at the Botany Industrial Park for safe and permanent destruction in Finland. The waste will be taken to Ekokem which is a highly experienced organisation in the safe destruction of international hazardous waste, and adheres to stringent conditions set for the protection of human health and the environment. The timing of the shipment is subject to regulatory approval. However, I am sure residents will be pleased with this development.

As part of our 2016/2017 capital works program, Council will be undertaking streetscape upgrade works on Botany Road, Botany. Some work may occur on Saturdays depending on RMS approvals on Botany Road. Works on other roads will occur from 7:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am-1:00pm on Saturdays. Council will try and minimize any inconvenience as much as possible. However, I am sure all residents of Botany and our City will enjoy the outcome of the works.
